Entertainment Law (Lawyer / Attorney) in Los Angeles

Catherine James

Catherine’s career spans the full spectrum of legal practice, providing her with a unique, 360-degree perspective that informs her client advocacy.

Before launching her firm, she honed her litigation skills as an employment attorney where she represented creative industry workers in complex disputes involving harassment, discrimination, and wrongful termination. In a dual role, she also served as the firm’s Social Media Marketing Manager, translating complex legal developments into accessible content.

Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish Cre8ors' Power Legal Services, a practice dedicated to providing business and intellectual property counsel to creators and startups. There, she handled everything from business formation and contract drafting to trademark registration.

Prior to that, Catherine was Head of Litigation and Transactional Attorney for a private Plaintiff Entertainment Law Firm in Beverly Hills. In this role, she managed the firm’s litigation docket, supervised a legal team, argued motions, and handled high-stakes entertainment contract negotiations, including the critical process of ratifying contracts for child performers.

Her industry experience is further strengthened by her time as a Business Representative at SAG-AFTRA. There, she advocated directly for union members by negotiating entertainment contracts, securing financial assurances for performers, and resolving disputes with producers across film, television, and new media. Catherine’s legal career is built on a foundation of hands-on experience as a law office manager and litigation paralegal, giving her an unparalleled understanding of efficient case management and the practical realities of legal disputes.

Catherine James is a California attorney dedicated to advocating for creative professionals, entrepreneurs, and employees. She began her legal career in 2006, working as a litigation paralegal, case manager, and law office manager before attending law school and gaining first-hand experience in civil litigation and law-office operations.

Admitted to practice in California in 2020, Catherine now focuses her practice at the intersection of entertainment law, California employment law, and business and intellectual property law, particularly for creative industry workers and startups.

With a practice built on nearly two decades in the legal field, she offers strategic counsel informed by robust litigation and transactional experience, as well as deep, practical insight into the operational and legal challenges faced by clients in California’s entertainment and creative industries. Catherine provides sophisticated legal solutions with a focus on protecting her clients’ rights, careers, and business interests.

Catherine’s multifaceted background translates directly into powerful client advocacy. By combining the strategic mind of a litigator, the precision of a transactional attorney, and the insider knowledge of a union representative, she offers a holistic approach to legal problem-solving.

Clients benefit from her ability to not only draft effective contracts and litigate aggressively but also to anticipate challenges unique to the entertainment and creative fields. Her experience managing law firms and solo practices provides a practical, business-oriented perspective that ensures legal strategies are both effective and efficient, protecting clients' immediate rights and long-term goals.

Whether you are an employee facing a workplace dispute, a creator protecting your intellectual property, or an entrepreneur building a business, Catherine James provides the skilled legal representation and dedicated partnership needed to navigate California’s complex legal landscape. Her firm is committed to delivering sophisticated counsel and unwavering support to help clients achieve their professional and creative ambitions.
